ANIMALS: Rabbit anyone?
Can anyone help me out? I have five beautiful rabbits staying with me in my surgery in Standish and they are driving me mad.
There is actually nothing wrong with these rabbits, they are well-behaved and they really are no trouble. So what is my problem you may ask?
The answer is that I am allergic to them and they give me asthma. Generally this is not a problem for me as a vet because I no longer treat them; they are treated by George, Natalie or Jac. However, when they stay in the surgery for more than a few nights, their fur must get into the air and then it affects me.
So, if you think that you may be in the market for a beautiful pet rabbit or two then please come and see us in Standish (phone 01257 426110). We look after these rabbits on behalf of the local branch of the RSPCA.
There is a fee to pay but each rabbit is vaccinated, health checked and neutered. The fee goes to the RSPCA to part cover their costs involved in the vaccines and neutering.
It is still considerably less expensive this way than buying a rabbit and then paying to have everything done yourself. If you know of anybody who might be interested then please let them know about us. My lungs will be eternally grateful.
Whilst I am on the subject, I also have three very nice cats that I am rehoming on behalf of the RSPCA. Again, they are vaccinated, health checked, wormed, de-flead and neutered.
Remember that old saying that animals are for life, not just for Christmas. Please do not buy or rescue an animal to give to someone as a present.
Taking on a pet should be a serious decision and should be thought through thoroughly. It is a commitment that should not be taken lightly.
I do not want to lecture people but just think it through – can you give that animal a good life and can you afford to look after it properly? Having a pet is what is called a symbiotic relationship – one where both parties gain by the presence of the other.
If you or anyone you know can help us out them please give the surgery a call. Also, please bear us in mind any time in the future when you or someone you know may be looking for a pet. We often have a variety of animals in – again vaccinated, neutered etc.
