CHARLES GRAHAM: Home of Tidy group should be litter-free
Whatever reservations I may have had about Wigan losing its (almost) Olympic-sized pool for one half its size had been overtaken in recent months by the urge to see anything at all happening on the site.
After all it's 10 months since the international swimming centre closed and until this week there was barely a sign of visible progress with the much vaunted Joint Service Centre (now renamed The Life Centre) when we had originally been told the wrecking balls would start swinging before Christmas.
And what with so many other projects stalling because of the recession, I was beginning to think that this would be another casualty.
So it was pleasing to report that the official handing over of the keys to the pool from council to developers took place this week and that work in earnest is now about to get under way. At the end of it Wigan will have a new pool, library and one-stop-shop for all manner of public services.
With a 200bn national debt to reduce in the years (decades?) to come, this country is facing some austere times ahead. It is nice to see that at least something will be breathing new Life into Wigan in the short term.
