A SUCCESSFUL singer and poet gave Wigan pupils an insight into life as an artist at a series of literary workshops.

John Hegley, whose career has included recording for John Peel with his band The Popticians and appearing at the Edinburgh Festival, visited Sunshine House in Scholes to tell young Wiganers about his career and inspire them to produce their own work.

His visit was part of the Wigan Pier Workshops, which saw secondary school pupils from across the borough take part in writing sessions with a host of top names from the creative world.

Other visitors to Wigan included national journalist Andrew Norfolk, author Stuart Evers and poet and playwright Joelle Taylor, while Wigan-born broadcaster and author Stuart Maconie also visited Scholes as a special guest.
