WIGAN’S only roller rink has celebrated its first birthday.
The rink, in Eckersley Mill, opened in August last year after a 20-year absence.
The original rink was opened in April 1980 and youngsters aged 14 to 18 used to meet and socialise while skating round the hall on roller skates.
It closed on Christmas Eve 1990, but the venue was resurrected last year, and has been just as popular. And to celebrate its success, bosses held two parties – an 80s themed disco with a live band as well as a family fun day, which included face painting, sumo wrestling, balloon modelling and games.
Tom Fairhurst, who worked at the rink in the 1980s, and now runs the site, said: “At first we didn’t know how well it would go, but it has been a real success.
“I feel a lot happier now knowing we have reached one year,
“We are one of the largest roller rinks in the country and have between 300 and 500 people coming to see us.
“We have gone from strength to strength and want to thank all our customers for supporting us over the year.”
