SIR Ian McKellen is to marry his X Men co-star Patrick Stewart.
The former Wiganer revealed that he will officiate and conduct the marriage service for his actor pal and fiancée Sunny Ozwell.
He made the surprise announcement during an appearance on The Jonathan Ross Show .
He said: “I’m going to marry Patrick,” before pausing and realizing that could be taken out of context, adding: “How else do you put that? I’m going to officiate at his wedding.”
He offered no explanation when asked how he would legally be able to marry Stewart and his jazz singer fiancée but he did say it won’t be the first time he’s officiated a union; he oversaw a civil partnership for two men.
The Hobbit and Lord of The Rings star also talked about his new gay sitcom Vicious, starring Sir Derek Jacobi, and growing up in the 1950s.
Sir Ian said: “If you were gay in the 1950s you didn’t dare risk telling anybody else you were in case you got reported to the police and put in prison. It was illegal to make love.”
He added the original name of the sitcom was Vicious Old Queens, to which McKellen protested saying he was ‘not old.’
The first series has already been filmed and Sir Ian and co and are now recording their first Christmas special.
The first episode will air later this year.
