ONE of the world’s top skateboarders has burst spectacularly into Standish.
British and European champion Neil Danns was guest of honour at a new season of the Ramp Riders mobile skate park which has landed at St Marie’s school.
It will return on Wednesdays August 8, 15 and 29.
Joint organiser and funder Coun George Fairhurst – representing residents’ group Standish 4 Youth - had a busy time as a “human traffic light” co-ordinating the hordes of teens queuing to get on to the jumps and ramps.
He is now appealing for more parents who may be prepared to help out during the future sessions.
Scores of young people attended and also kept him busy handing out free drinks courtesy of sponsors, the Standish Co-op.
Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust’s (WLCT) Sports Development Team and Standish 4 Youth teamed up with Ramp Riders to deliver six skateboard, BMX and scooter sessions at the Avondale school during the summer holidays.
This was the first time sufficient funding was secured for a full holiday-long programme.
The sessions, which will run between noon and 3pm, are part funded through Sport England’s Sportivate programme which has helped them be pegged at a price of just £2. There are skateboards and micro scooters – plus safety wear – available to borrow for those without the equipment and everyone is invited to go along.
Parental consent is required to participate.
Neil Danns has thrilled young extreme sports fans from Beirut to Brazil with his all-action style.
And the gravity defying star arrived promising more great freestyle stunts for his legion of followers.
Chris Essex-Crosby, community sports development manager, said: “Last summer The Co-operative supported a full programme of activities for young people in the Standish community and the feedback we received was very positive.
“The project team identified Ramp Riders as the most popular activity and would like to thank Sport England and Greater Sport for not only providing the funding to enable further activities to take place but also for arranging sporting champion, Neil Danns to visit the project.”
Skateboard superstar Neil will now also be attending the August 15 session and eager to come along and pass on some coaching and life skills that have made him such a giant in the sport.
