IT’S not often you get a chance to compete against two international sports stars.
But if you go to the Grand Arcade this Saturday, that’s exactly what you have the chance to do.
Table tennis pros Chris Doran and Hannah Hicks will be in the shopping centre to take part in a three day table tennis festival.
Organised by Steve Rowe of Wigan Table Tennis club, there will be tables at the Grand Arcade on Friday, Saturday and Sunday for folk to have a go at the sport.
On Friday, young disabled people are being invited down from local schools to try out the sport to kick off the event.
And on Saturday the two internationals will take to the table.
Hannah, England’s number three, and Chris, who is ranked as the country’s number seven, will play in an exhibition match before members of the public can take them on and showcase their skills.
Steve said: “It’s going to be a wonderful event and it’s amazing to have two international stars coming down to Wigan.
“We’re hoping we get as many people down as possible, young and old, beginners to experts.
“The aim is to help build interest in the sport and I have to say a huge thank you to the Grand Arcade who are allowing us to put this on.”
On Sunday, there will be open tables all day for people to have a go.
On all three days, there will be one full-sized table as well as six three-quarter sized tables which Steve uses in the community when coaching the sport with Wigan Athletic.
He added: “Those tables are aimed at the younger children, aged six and above.
“We’re going to have a few fun games going on to including a robot to play against!
“I thought with this year being the Olympic year, it’d be great to bring an Olympic sport to the town.”
The tables will be open between 10am and 5pm each day, for more information visit www.wiganttc.co.uk or e-mail firstname.lastname@example.org.
