Treat for opera fans

A LEADING opera company is bringing its production of Madame Butterfly to Wigan this summer.

Heritage Opera, which is Lancashire’s only professional opera company, will be staging the production at Haigh Hall on Thursday, August 12.

For those who are not familiar with the opera, it is set in Nagasaki, Japan, in around the year 1900.

A young geisha girl called Madame Butterfly risks being rejected by all around her by marrying Lieutenant Pinkerton, an American naval officer.

After their first night of passion, Pinkerton is recalled by the Navy, but his young Japanese wife never gives up hope of seeing him again.

When Pinkerton finally returns, he brings a terrible truth with him that leads to the opera’s heartbreaking conclusion.

The actors will be accompanied by the pianist Paul Greenhalgh and Chris Gill will be the conductor.

Chris is a top conductor who has appeared across the North West as a freelance conductor with many orchestras, opera companies and choirs.

Madame Butterfly is staged in authentic 1900s Japanese and Western costumes. which is bound to be a feast for the eye.

The performance retains the beauty of the original language as it is sung in Italian – but the audience will get the best of both worlds thanks to the subtitles (the English translation projected during the performance).

Tickets for the performance, which are still available, cost £18.50 (£16.50 concessions) and are available online at www.heritageopera.co.uk or from Quaytickets on 0843 208 0500.
