AN articulated lorry sparked traffic chaos on the motorway near Wigan after its trailer set on fire.
The lorry’s brake drum overheated and set alight a tyre on the M6 southbound between junction 26, in Orrell, and 25, in Ashton, at 6.30pm on Monday.
The fire spread to the lorry’s trailer and sparked an inferno on the motorway.
Fire crews from Wigan and Newton-le-Willows and attended the scene and used two hose reels and two breathing apparatus to tackle the flames.
A spokesman from Wigan Fire Station said: “An overheated brake drum set fire to a tyre and ignited the trailer unit.
“There was a lot of smoke and fire, causing disruption for traffic for more than an hour.
“Two lanes were closed on the motorway for quite some time, causing delays.”
The driver of the lorry escaped from injury.
