THE new mayor and deputy mayor for Wigan in 2012/13 have been confirmed.
The mayoress will be current deputy, Leigh West Coun Myra Whiteside (pictured above). She will be joined by Worsley Mesnes Coun Billy Rotherham.
The pair will take up their roles this May when Coun Joy Birch’s term comes to an end.
It means Coun Whiteside is the first female mayor for the borough who hails from Leigh, something she says is a huge honour.
“It’s something to be proud of,” she said.
“We haven’t had a female mayor from Leigh so it is an honour to be given the role and I really am relishing it.
“I’m up for the challenge and I have plenty of new ideas to bring to the fold but I’m not going to say what they are yet as it isn’t my time now.
“Joy is the mayoress for the next few months and it is her time.”
Part of the mayor’s role is to select a charity which she will raise money for throughout her campaign,
And Coun Whiteside will be raising money for Wigan and Leigh pensioner’s link.
She said: “I just think it’s a very worthwhile charity and one which helps local people,
“Some older people aren’t as well off as others so it is a great way in which we can help them.”
Coun Whiteside had a taste of one of her responsibilities earlier this week when she chaired the full council meeting in Coun Birch’s absence.
She added: “I enjoyed it and felt comfortable enough.
“I am the chair of the Building Stronger Communities Committee too.”
