Adults urged to jump into a book!
Carole Ogden with HAL to highlight the Reddit campaign
A NEW campaign hopes to encourage more adults to read
Hal, a tree frog who loves to bury his head in books, is fronting a The Reddit Challenge in Wigan and Leigh to encourage parents to read more in front of their children.
Organised by Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust, HAL stands for Heritage, Arts and Libraries.
Anyone who reads six books and returns their completed Reddit! Reading Diary receives a certificate and entry into a prize draw for a Sony e-Reader and other reading-related prizes.
Carole Ogden, audience development officer for the borough’s libraries, said: “Many people bring children to the library but don’t take books themselves. It is really important for children to see adults reading, and to understand that it is a normal part of life that can be useful, relaxing and enjoyable.”
Anything counts towards the challenge; recipe books, quick reads, reading a bedtime story to a child or finding out more about where you are going on holiday.
The closing date for completed diaries is Friday September 17. For more information, call into your library or Waterstones in the Grand Arcade.
