Another 11 weeks of misery for motorists
MOTORISTS are facing an autumn of roadwork chaos as an 11-week scheme gets under way on one of Wigan’s busiest roads.
Work begins on the Scot Lane River Bridge - which crosses the River Douglas near the junction with Woodhouse Lane - on August 31, just days before thousands of children return to school for the new term after the summer break.
Contractors Renco will be carrying out basic bridge maintenance of behalf of Wigan Council. Highways bosses insist delays along the road will be kept to a minimum and two-way traffic will remain in place for the majority of the works.
But temporary traffic lights will be needed at times as some operations may require shuttle working.
Shuttle working comes into operation when a road is reduced to only one lane, requiring drivers moving in opposite direction to give way to one another.
Announcing the Scot Lane works on their Roadworks Bulletin website, Wigan Council said: “Work will commence on Scot Lane River Bridge (River Douglas) on Tuesday 31st August for 11 weeks.
“Traffic disruption should be kept to a minimum because two way traffic will be in place for the majority of the work however there could be operations that require shuttle working (e.g. temporary traffic signals) for short durations.”
Drivers have been subjected to roadwork delays across the borough for much of the summer.
Long-term gas and water mains replacement schemes being carried out by the North West Gas Alliance and United Utilities respectively continue throughout Wigan. The Environment Agency continues with its roadworks on Coppull Lane, Swinley, an 18 month scheme that began in January this year.
Wigan Council’s Bridge Section began structural maintenance work on Garswood Park Bridge over Millingford Brook, which crosses Liverpool Road in Ashton, on Monday, August 2.
Temporary traffic signals will be in operation at all times until September 10.
Marsh Green, a busy cut through for drivers moving between Pemberton, Kitt Green and Scot Lane has been closed since the beginning of the month for resurfacing and repair work.
This dates back to the snow and ice the UK experienced through the winter, which caused the road surface to break up and left it full of pot-holes. The work, including the construction of new speed bumps, is due to be completed on September 3.
