POLICE are appealing for information after a driver fled the scene when his car careered into an embankment and burst into flames.

Fire crews from Wigan were called to Billinge Road, Winstanley at 6.30am on Friday, following reports a green Jaguar X-Type was in flames.

The occupants of the car were later found and taken to hospital, where the driver had both breath and blood tested for alcohol.

Inspector Paul Rowe from Wigan police station said: “The driver and the passenger of the vehicle had both been drinking, and by pure adrenaline were able to flee the scene, they were found shortly after.

“If anyone witnessed this collision or has any information that may assist our investigation, please contact the Serious Collision Investigation Unit on 0161 856 4742.”

Crew manager Paul Baines, from Wigan Fire Station, said: “The car left the road, hit a lamp post and went into an embankment with trees and caught fire. The driver fled the scene and I believe the police have caught up with him. Luckily no-one was injured.”
