A WIGAN dad was devastated when he watched his van engulfed in flames.

The black J-reg Renault Traffic 1400, which was parked in Douglas Road, Swinley, was deliberately torched by arsonists at 9.30pm on Wednesday.

Two fire appliances attended the scene and crews used two hose reels to extinguish the flames.

Owner Denis Houghton, 48, only bought the van as a run-around for him and his family in February this year and was angry he has lost his mode of transport.

The unemployed father-of-four said: “I had fallen asleep and my wife woke me up to say she thought my lights were left on in the van and then we heard a bang.

I went outside and saw the van was ablaze.

“My neighbour had noticed a petrol can underneath the front wheel.”

If anyone has any information, they should call the police using the new number - 101.
