A WIGAN Athletic fan enjoyed an extra special day on Saturday when he was called away from his side’s thrashing of Colchester to attend the birth of his baby.

Father-to-be Daniel Cunliffe had to make a speedy exit from the DW Stadium shortly after the second half got under way when an announcement was made that his girlfriend had gone into labour.

Following the news, the crowd erupted and began chanting to him, “time to go”.

The team had been 4-0 up against Colchester and went on to add another, which Daniel presumably missed.

A Latics spokesman saaid: “It was called up to our stadium announcer, asking can we get the message to him. It said ‘Can Daniel Cunliffe please make yourself known, your girlfriend has gone into labour’. The crowd started singing ‘cheerio’.”Wigan Athletic tweeted from the ground: “An announcement for one of our fans over the tannoy.. whose girlfriend has just gone into labour! Time to go is the chant from ES2 #wafc”

It’s believed that Daniel’s partner later gave birth to a baby boy.
