Yobs set fire to seven bales of hay, causing thick black smoke.

Crews were called to Landgate Farm, of Landgate Lane, Bryn, at 3.30pm on Sunday after seven stacks of hay had been set alight.

They used a hose reel to extinguish the flames and were at the scene for about an hour.

Throughout the weekend, firefighters from across the borough attended a number of deliberate grass fires.

Crews also attended the market precinct near Market Place, in Atherton, near Atherton Parish Church, in the early hours of Sunday morning, after someone had deliberately set fire to a mattress.

A spokesman for Greater Mancchester Fire and Rescue Service warned people about setting deliberate fires and burning waste.

He said; “The problem with us attending secondary fires is that they are completely preventable and stop the nearest fire engines from going to real emergencies because they are tied up at the grass and rubbish fires.

“There are adequate recycling plants all over the area and people should take their rubbish there.”
