Band to record at ‘home of the hits’ studio in New York

The Portlands

The Portlands

A LOCAL indie rock band will soon start working at one of the most famous recording studios in the world.

David Bowie, The Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton and Mariah Carey are just a few of the illustrious acts who have recorded some of their biggest hits at Skyline Studios, in New York City.

And, next month, The Portlands will add their name to the long list of performers who will have played there.

The band, fronted by 22-year-old Dook Dootson, will jet off for the US on August 30 and will spend just under two weeks recording songs for an upcoming EP.

Dook said: “To get the chance to record at a studio which has been used by some of the biggest names in pop and rock music is amazing. We’re going to be working with a producer called Nick Miller, who has worked with the likes of Billy Joel and Patti Smith. It’s going to be flat out, working 12 hours a day with no breaks, so we’ll have to be on our game.”

The band have been wanting to record material in a lush recording studio for some time.

Dook said: “We’ve felt that our previous recordings haven’t reflected us in a true light.

“We got talking to a few different studios in America and had our hearts set on working in Nebraska with Mike Mogis, from the band Bright Eyes.

“But because we would have to wait over a year for a space to become available, we decided to look elsewhere.”

At Skyline Studios, The Portlands are hoping to record seven songs.

Six of those will be released as consecutive singles and will then make up an EP.

The seventh track will be released as a Christmas single.

Dook said: “From January next year, we will be releasing a single a month, each of which we will make a video for, too. The six songs will then be put together on an EP and then, in December, we’ll release our Christmas single.”

This summer, The Portlands played at Haigh Fest and are believed to have drawn the biggest crowd at the outdoor event.

Dook, from Beech Drive, Leigh, added: “Haigh Fest was fantastic.

“It had been raining all morning but, after we were on stage for a couple of minutes, the sun came out and everybody was having a great time.”
