Beware pickpockets

Wigan shoppers are being reminded to be vigilant against pickpockets as they head out to the Boxing Day sales.

Police are promoting the use of purse bells, which can also be easily attached to handbags, that make a sound if thieves attempt to steal belongings.

They are especially useful for older and disabled people who are more vulnerable to pickpockets.

Inspector Glenn Jones, of the Wigan Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: "These devices should help to make shopping safer for everyone, and it is worth remembering that every time you take your purse out of your bag you should put it back safely and fasten your bag properly.

"However, I want to reassure shoppers that the chances of becoming a victim of this type of crime are low.

"Crimes committed by strangers in public places are still rare and account for a very small number of recorded crimes."

Labour Coun Kevin Anderson, cabinet champion for neighbourhoods, said: "Wigan is a safe place to live and shop. But we can all help to make the town centre safer still by taking on board some practical advice.

"These purse bells are an effective low-cost deterrent against opportunistic thieves. They help to remind people to be extra vigilant during the lead-up to the January sales, when evidence suggests thieves prey on busy shoppers."

Shoppers can reduce the chances of having valuables stolen by following some simple safety tips.

These include not carrying more money than you need to, keeping handbags fastened at all times and keeping a purse or wallet out of sight.

If you use a wheelchair, keep your things beside you rather than at the back of the chair.

Keep your cards separate from your cheque books.

If your cards are stolen, call your bank or credit card company as soon as possible.
