SAFETY on a busy Wigan road could be given a boost.

Coun Paul Prescott is in talks with the council to install a vehicle-activated sign in City Road, Kitt Green, following two accidents recently.

He said: “The council’s traffic management team did a survey and found that vehicles were doing in excess of 30.

“The zebra crossing was installed near Montrose Avenue and City Road as a place where people can cross safely. But there have been two accidents on that crossing and a number of real close calls.

“The most recent involved a car travelling along City Road from Marsh Green to Pemberton and a youngster who was crossing the road and the child was severely injured. About two years ago an elderly woman spent time in hospital after an accident there.

“There are, at times, some inconsiderate people who want to get to their destination three seconds earlier and they are putting lives in danger.

“So I have put in a request for another vehicle-activated sign and the council has agreed to do a site visit and decide where it should go and speak to local residents about it.”

This is the second crusade Coun Prescott has initiated, as last month he was the driving force behind the council agreeing to install a vehicle-activated sign in nearby Prescott Lane. Work is expected to start in the next few weeks.
