Wiganers have already raised almost £33,000 for the statute and with news of a major donation expected in the next few days, plans are well under way for the unveiling of the landmark tribute later this year.

Plans were announced last year ahead of Billy’s 80th birthday and this week he has visited the site where it will proudly stand, facing his old stomping ground at Central Park.

This week Billy and wife Joan visited the place where the sculpture is to go and the Welshman declared: “It’s absolutely fantastic.

“So many great players have played for Wigan so for me to be chosen like this is wonderful. I feel so proud.

I think this is a great spot to have it and for it to be facing Central Park where I played all those years ago is very special

“I think this is a great spot to have it and for it to be facing Central Park where I played all those years ago is very special.

“I would like to thank all those people who are raising money to get this done. I am very grateful to everyone.”

A number of events have taken place over the last few months to generate thousands of pounds to go towards the statue.

A large chunk of the overall fund needed has already been made and with a huge donation expected to be confirmed in the coming weeks, it’s hoped that work on the statue will progress very soon.

Stephen Winterburn is the man overseeing the project and he is no stranger to Billy.

The Hull-based sculptor is also in charge of the statue of five rugby league legends at Wembley which will be unveiled on Challenge Cup final day, which will also include the Welsh legend alongside other Wigan greats Martin Offiah and Eric Ashton.

Fans can make donations to the Billy Boston Statue Trust at the Warriors shop in the Grand Arcade and to Wigan Warriors at Central Park.
