THE body of a pensioner was recovered from a canal in Wigan early on Saturday morning.
Police are declining to say whether the man, who was in his 80s, is the elderly Scholes resident reported missing earlier this month.
But they have now confirmed, after an investigation, that there appear to be no suspicious circumstances to the incident.
The man’s family have been informed and have identified him,
The body was discovered by a shocked pair of boaters in a lock pound on the Poolstock stretch of the Leigh branch.
It is understood that the man’s body wasn’t visible until the couple piloting the barge opened the sluices to fill the lock .
The tow path close to where the body was found is particularly narrow at this point as it passes the lock, heightening the chances of somebody unsteady on their feet falling in. An inquest is expected to be opened and adjourned this week.
