Firms get gold at safety awards

Businesses across Wigan have been recognised for maintaining very high safety standards at an annual awards ceremony.

A total of nine awards were handed out to businesses across the borough – six of them gold and three silver – by the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents Occupational Health and Safety (RoSPA).

Each year businesses up and down the country are recognised for their

commitment to the RoSPA mission statement – to save lives and reduce injuries.

Almost 100 businesses across Greater Manchester and Lancashire, including those from Wigan, were honoured at this year's awards.

Those who scooped gold awards were: BAM Nuttall Limited (Wigan Plant Depot), KMI Plus, Premier Foods (Hovis), all Wigan, BAM Nuttall Ltd Rail North of Ashton, and Norbert

Dentressangle Asda Division and Matalan Distribution, both of Skelmersdale.

The silver winners were: McInerney Homes Wigan Silver and Astley Facades Ltd (group of companies), and Trelleborg CRP Ltd of Skelmersdale.

Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service also won the award for Emergency Services Sector.

Tom Mullarkey, RoSPA chief executive, said: "Health and safety tends to hit the headlines in the aftermath of major accidents or when it is deemed to have 'gone too far'.

"But the reality is that millions of sensible safety decisions are taken across Britain each day which prevent countless accidents and the suffering they cause.

"The RoSPA Occupational Health and Safety Awards are a way of highlighting and

rewarding those whose daily contribution keeps us safe and healthy.

"We congratulate winners for the commitment they have shown to continuous improvement in this sphere."

The awards were presented over three days at the Hilton Birmingham Metropole Hotel, at the National Exhibition Centre.

Nationwide, more than 1,650 organisations and businesses were honoured, the most in the awards' 53-year history.

The awards were sponsored by the National Examination Board in Occupational Safety and Health (NEBOSH).

More than 3,000 people attended gala presentation award dinners which were held following daytime award presentations last month.
