Hope for Wigan pier nightclub
The Pier Nightspot at Wigan Pier
ONE of the North West’s best known night spots – The Pier – is back on the market.
The lease for the nightclub, which closed at Christmas after a long battle with environmental protection watchdogs, is now being offered for sale by owners Thwaites Brewery.
Although they say that it comes with substantial incentives and is based in a popular leisure area in Lower Wallgate, they also point out that the 40-year-old building would suit “other commercial uses.”
And a spokesman for the agents handling the sale revealed that a bidding war may already be about to take place to get the dancing floor bouncing again.
The 7,700 sqft premises in Pottery Road had been at the centre of a long-running dispute about the noise levels escaping from the two-storey building.
Neighbours in the new apartments at Trencherfield Mill and the terraced houses in Canal Row have made repeated complaints that the heavy beat of the style of dance music favoured at The Pier could be heard inside homes, ruining their quality of life.
Operators fitted an advanced PA system which prevented DJs from manually breaching the sound decibel limits agreed by both parties.
But the muted music proved so unpopular with clubbers that it ended up rendering the nightclub unviable.
Michael Cavannagh, spokesman for the surveyors which are handling the sale, said: “We have recent been instructed by Thwaites to market their leasehold interest in this historic leisure venue.
“Despite being at the early stage of marketing we have already received a high level of interest from potential local operators.
“A regional and national marketing campaign is shortly to be undertaken and we are hopeful that this will bring forward further interest in one of the best known leisure areas not just in Wigan but across the North West.”
The club, with a first floor main dance floor area and reception cloakrooms/changing rooms and kitchen, also has a separate VIP bar and kitchen area on the first floor.
It is available as a sublease for a term of years to be agreed on flexible terms and Thwaites Brewery is also offering a capital investment package dependent upon the prospective tenant’s proposed use and length of lease.
The Pier had been a key part of the region’s nightclub scene since the 1970s and, at its rave and house music peak in the mid 1990s was regularly pulling in 800 customers on a Friday and Saturday night.
