Legal Eagle steps down

The founder of a major Wigan legal firm has retired - Chris Stephenson established Stephensons in 1977 as a one-man operation and has seen it expand to become one of the region's largest legal practices.

It has 26 partners and more than 300 staff across offices in Wigan, Manchester, Leigh and St Helens.

Mr Stephenson lives in Culcheth with his wife Trish, who also retired as head of human resources at the firm last year.

He qualified as a solicitor in 1970 after serving his articles in Leigh with Marsh Son and Calvert and became a partner before going on to set up his own firm, Stephenson and Co.

Having enjoyed many roles at Stephensons, including sole practitioner, chairman and managing partner, in 2001Mr Stephenson stepped down from a management position to become head of re-mortgaging and concentrated on developing Stephensons' innovative case management system.

He is a renowned solicitor whose work in the area of residential and commercial property has been recognised on many occasions, including several recommendations in the Legal 500, the independent guide to the legal profession.

Ann Harrison, chairman of Stephensons, said: "Chris has been very influential in the growth and development of the firm, and he built the solid foundations which allowed Stephensons to grow to its current size.

"We have extremely ambitious plans for the future and recent successes include our securing of substantial new work through tenders and achieving the Law Society's Lexcel accreditation.

"We wish Chris and Trish a long and happy retirement."
