Praise as Scott builds a new life

A former criminal who spectacularly turned his life around has narrowly missed out on a major award.

Scott Marsden – a one-time resident of Hindley Prison and now a skilled builder and joiner at Leigh-based Hughes Brothers – was runner-up at the North West Local Employment Partnership Awards.

The 21-year-old from Westhoughton was in the running for the Changing a Life prize at the Old Trafford ceremony but was pipped at the post by a woman who had returned to work after a major breakdown.

But he and his bosses were nonetheless proud of his achievements today.

Scott was lined up for a job at the company while still serving a three-and-a-half-year sentence for attempted robbery.

He had shown great remorse at the criminal path his adolescence had taken and attended Hughes Brothers workshops in the prison.

Scott is currently one of eight ex-offenders on the company's books and

Hughes Brothers have picked up awards for their pioneering rehabilitation work.

He already has qualifications under his belt and plans to accumulating plenty more – including a university degree.

The firm's co-director John Hughes said: "This nomination has put another spring in his step."
