Cheaper to whistle while you work...

In today's business world, playing a radio in the office may seem like the least of your worries, but beware – if you haven't got a licence you may be fined.

Over the last few weeks, several members have contacted us about phone calls they have received from the Performing Right Society (PRS).

The PRS represents musicians and performers, and has been cold calling companies across Greater Manchester asking if they play a radio at work. If they say yes, they are told they need a licence.

Many were mystified as they had not even heard of the PRS and did not know anything about the need for a licence. One, who runs St Joseph's Workshops in Wigan, initially thought it was a scam and has since set up website www.radionono.blogspot.

com to gather views from other businesses.

While we are all in favour of compliance, what has emerged is a lack of knowledge about this organisation and what it stands for.

We contacted the PRS on behalf of our members and they are planning to work with us to raise awareness.

There are many demands on businesses today to comply with a whole host of rules and regulations and it can be difficult working out which are genuine. Employers are busy running businesses, satisfying customers and looking after staff, and the Chamber is here to help.
