WIGAN is to be given another major jobs boost as a major employer looks to expand further.
Arrow XL, which is the rebranded name of Yodel XL, will unveil a state-of-the-art logistics and distribution centre in the summer after a refurbishment of its existing Martland Park site.
The new facility will provide an additional 200,000sq ft delivery hub for their network with the creation of new jobs to come in the near future.
Chief executive of Arrow XL Gary Monk said: “Our plan is to grow and we’ll achieve this through investing in our workforce, we have already increased our permanent headcount by 30 people since moving to Wigan.
“We anticipate further
employment opportunities to emerge across the business and will of course look to recruit locally when appropriate.
“With a local workforce of more than 500 people and our head office now based in Wigan, we’re looking forward to working with the Wigan community in achieving and sharing our success.”
Arrow XL already boasts the UK’s largest two-man delivery service, servicing thousands of homes across the country.
The expansion of their facilities on the Martland Mill Industrial Estate - at the former GUS/Reality home delivery site - will buck a recent trend of Wigan based operations falling foul of the economic downturn.
Following on from JJB’s demise late last year, Martland Park family firm HW Glass went into administration last month as did engineering firm BHW Components last week.
Deputy council leader Coun David Molyneux welcomed the news as a boost to the town’s economy.
He said: “I’m obviously delighted to hear that Arrow XL is expanding its operation in Wigan, not only retaining the workforce here but also creating new jobs.
“A recent report by business specialists Duport found that the borough is one of the top areas in the UK in which to set up business and see company growth.
“Arrow is a perfect example of this and the council will remain committed to providing a wealth of support to make sure our business community continues to prosper and grow.
“I hope that their investment is rewarded with continued success over the coming years.”
Mr Monk added: “This is just the start of the ambitious plans we have for the company and we are hugely excited about what the coming years have to offer us.”
