AN entrepreneur whose novel invention has proved a roaring success is in line for a prestigious business award.
Nuala Lewis, from Standish, developed the Slouch Mat – a mouse mat that can be used on uneven surfaces – last year and is about to break into the US market.
As recognition for her success, the 31-year-old is one of six nominees for the Young Entrepreneur of the Year at this year’s Enterprise Vision Awards.
The EVAs celebrate businesswomen across the North West with awards handed out for several categories.
Nuala, who works as a economic development officer at Chorley Council, said: “It is very exciting to be nominated. The awards aim to inspire women to be entrepreneurial which is a great thing.
“I have had a look at my rival candidates and they are all fantastic entries. But I think I standalone in that the others have been nominated for the services they provide whereas mine is for an actual product.
“Plus I’m the only candidate from Wigan so it would be nice to have some support.”
The winner is chosen half on public vote and half on the results of an interview with the panel of judges.
Nuala added: “I have had the interview but we are not told before the vote how we got on.
“It would be great to win but I’m also happy to be nominated.”
Nuala’s innovative product is marketed as the only mouse mat in the world that is designed to be used away from a flat desk.
It has been on sale in Argos this year and has recently been included in Staples stores nationwide.
A second product in the slouch mat line – a cover for tablet computers – is due for release later this year.
Nuala said: “It’s exciting times for us because the Slouch Mat has done well and now we’re almost ready to release our next thing.
“It is a tablet cover but it will have an innovative design feature that we are keeping to ourselves at the moment.
“We’re hoping the process will be easier this time round because of the experience of introducing the Slouch Mat into the market, I have learned a lot and have more knowledge of how to get things started.”
