A car was severely damaged in a fire which the emergency services believe was started deliberately.

Fire crews were called to a field off Melrose Avenue in Westleigh at around 8pm on Friday.

They found a vehicle which was believed to be a Ford Focus well alight in the middle of the patch of open land.

Firefighters used a hose reel to extinguish the flames and were at the scene for around 20 minutes.

The crew from Atherton fire station said the vehicle had clearly been on fire for some time when they arrived and they believe the car was abandoned on the field and set alight on purpose.

The incident has now been passed to Greater Manchester Police.
