Casino's Russ and Sandy on Paul O'Grady show

Two Wigan Casino stalwarts will appear on a TV chat show this evening to pass on their dancing skills.

Wigan DJ Russ Winstanley and dancer Sandy Holt have been invited on to the Paul O'Grady Show to teach the star how to dance to Northern Soul – without injury.

Paul recently told the nation of his happy, but sometimes painful, memories of dancing at the legendary music venue.

He explained to Bruce Forsyth on his daily Channel Four programme how he was an avid fan of Wigan Casino but sometimes came a cropper when he tried to execute some of the energetic dance moves.

Russ, who plays a selection of Northern Soul classics on his BBC Radio Lancashire show every Saturday night, is determined to help to improve Paul's dancing skills.

He said: "It's going to be a lot of fun. Me and Sandy are really looking forward to getting Paul on his feet and shaking his stuff.

"Paul is one of a host of celebrities who have fond memories of Wigan Casino and Northern Soul which has had a re-emergence with the success of singers such as Duffy and Amy Winehouse."

Researchers from The Paul O'Grady Show approached Russ with the idea of appearing on the programme at Wigan Casino's 35th anniversary party last month.

Speaking about his love for the renowned disco, once voted the best club in the world, Paul said: "It was a fantastic place.

"You used to queue up round the block for an all-nighter.

"It would start at midnight and go right through to 8am.

"You knew it was coming to an end because they always played the same three records to finish.

"I used to try that thing when you fall backwards and land on your hand, only when I tried it the hands weren't there and I would crack my head on the floor.

The show goes out on Channel Four at 5pm.
