Charity rugby match for Wigan legend Mike

The memory of Wigan and Warrington rugby league legend Mike Gregory is to be honoured this week at a charity rugby match.

Students from Wigan and Leigh College will battle their opposite numbers from Warrington Collegiate tomorrow at Wilderspool Stadium.

All proceeds from the match will benefit the Mike Gregory Trust Fund and Warrington Rugby League Service Area.

Warrington Collegiate unveiled Mike Gregory Street at their Winwick Road campus earlier this year in honour of the former Great Britain captain, who died in November 2007 at the age of just 43 following a four-year battle with motor neurone disease.

Alan Kilshaw, whose role as Cheshire and Warrington Service Area Co-ordinator makes him responsible for developing rugby in Warrington, said: "This is a perfect tribute to a true sporting legend. All of the students involved have been inspired by the work and achievements of

Mike Gregory and I'm certain it will be a memorable and touching evening."

In addition to Mike Gregory Street, Warrington Collegiate students who make outstanding achievements in both sport and education are honoured on a special wall of fame.

This was inspired by a quote from the sporting star, who famously encouraged youngsters to "pursue education and sport with equal vigour".

Gregory is a legend in both his home town of Wigan, where he coached the Warriors, and Warrington where he played.

During his career, he captained Warrington and Great Britain, including on a tour to New Zealand, and won 20 Lions caps.

As well as coaching Wigan, he also trained the under-21s and was involved with the England Academy side.

Although he spent his playing career at Warrington Wolves, Mike was a product of the Wigan St Patrick's amateur club and lived in Standish Lower Ground with his family.

The Mike Gregory Cup takes place at Wilderspool Stadium at 7.30pm.

Tickets are 5 each and are available from Mike Brogan or Alan Kilshaw on 01925 494 407.
