For while they may have thought human poachers were to blame for stealing their valuable koi carp, these images from reader Wendy Grehan show who the real culprit is.

This heron was caught red-winged by Wendy at 7.30am on Sunday with a large orange and white fish in its beak on the roof of a house in White Street in Leigh.

As she snapped away from her own house nearby, the bird clumsily dropped the fish and it fell to the ground. But she thinks that the predator swooped to the earth and collected it up again out of sight.

Wendy said: “I don’t know where or from whom the carp was taken from but I assume it was nearby.

“Maybe the owner of the fish thinks they have a poacher? These pictures suggest otherwise!”
