POLICE were called to a Wigan primary school after receiving reports that a motorist had attempted to lure a little girl into his car.

Officers investigated reports of an attempted abduction near to Birchley St Mary’s Primary School in Billinge last Tuesday afternoon.

It led to text message alerts being issued to several local schools. However, police have revealed that the incident has since been classed as a false alarm.

A Merseyside force spokeswoman confirmed that the motorist, an elderly man, had simply been asking for directions.

She said: “We received a report that someone had asked this little girl to get in his car while she was walking home from school. She was frightened by what happened and her family feared the worst.

“But we had a good description of the car and used CCTV footage in the area to trace the driver.

“It turns out he wasn’t from the area and had merely stopped to ask directions because he was lost.”
