College enrolment is the busiest ever
WIGAN and Leigh College has pledged to continue enrolling new students throughout the year as record numbers battle for places.
College chiefs say they have already signed up thousands of new students for both adult and 16 to 18-year-old courses.
But with dwindling numbers of unfilled places, the college, in Parsons Walk, Wigan, has stressed that students can still enrol for adult courses during the next academic year.
And high demand from prospective students has forced the college to organise two further enrolment days on September 10 and 17.
A spokesman for Wigan and Leigh College said: “We have had a really successful enrolment with new students joining the college and existing students progressing onto higher level courses.
“The college’s enrolment numbers cannot be finalised at the moment as enrolment is ongoing. Adult enrolment takes place throughout the year, not just in September.
“Around 95 per cent of our A-level students have secured a place at university this year and we are extremely pleased for them.
“Enrolment is ongoing and the college is committed to supporting 16 to 18-year-olds and adults to find the right course. Due to continued course enquiries the college is holding more enrolment days on September 10 and September 17, from 10am to 3pm.”
Wigan and Leigh College offers 4,000 full-time places for 16 to 18-year-olds and 10,000 adult learner places.
Across the country, a scramble for university is under way with up to 186,000 students chasing a dwindling number of unfilled places.
With another record in the A-level pass rate, and 27 per cent of entries gaining A or A* grades, the competition appears more intense than ever.
The university admissions service said 2010 was perhaps the toughest year for admissions for the past decade. Wigan and Leigh College says it has avoided having to axe places on adult courses after a cost-saving programme was successful.
The college is not having to reduce students numbers despite having hundreds of thousands of pounds axed from its budget.
College chiefs say they have made enough efficiency savings to rule out the need to reduce class sizes on their adult courses. The college revealed in June that hundreds of thousands of pounds has been axed from its budget. The budget for adult learning courses has been slashed by £500,000 for the 2010/11 academic year.
Despite the reduction in adult learning funding, the college has received a cash boost for 16 to 19-year-olds students because of a lack of spaces across the country for students seeking to go onto higher education.
