ANIMALS: All pets need vaccinations
June is National Vaccination Month. This has been promoted widely on TV and radio but what exactly is its purpose?
Well, firstly it aims to promote vaccination in domestic pets – to emphasise the importance of regular vaccinations and boosters against the major diseases.
By doing so it also serves as a timely reminder of the possible consequences suffered by unfortunate unvaccinated animals should they contact one of the preventable diseases.
The second purpose of the scheme is to promote the so-called "vaccination amnesty."
All pets require regular booster vaccinations in order to maintain their immunity against the major preventable diseases.
Once these boosters have been missed, in order to re-establish the previous immunity status, the vaccination programme needs to be restarted.
As most of you will know this involves a course of two vaccinations two or three weeks apart, at a cost roughly double that of a booster.
Here at the Gilmore Veterinary Surgery in Standish we are participating in a scheme whereby any dogs, cats or rabbits which have lapsed vaccination status can be brought up to date for the cost of one booster vaccination.
This vaccination amnesty represents a considerable financial saving but more importantly gives all our clients the opportunity to bring their pets' vaccination status up to date.
This offer is only available at certain participating veterinary practices – these can be checked on the internet at www.vaccinationmonth.co.uk.
Why not take this limited opportunity to play your part in improving the immunity of your own dog, cat or rabbit and so indirectly the general health of the pet population nationally?
