ASK YOUR DOTOR: Preparing for swine flu
Swine flu is knocking at the door locally in Wigan. A few weeks ago, I suggested time would tell if the fuse was slow-burning.
The spread of the illness is faster than initially predicted and has now been declared a pandemic.
The condition for most sufferers is a relatively mild condition. Influenza of whatever strain should be regarded as more than just a minor illness such as a nose cold or slight sore throat.
All GPs (locally and nationally) have been sent updated advice about dealing with suspects and contacts.
A local health building is housing the testing kits with gowns and masks which GPs need to collect if testing is needed.
Couriers take the samples to specified laboratories. A local pharmacy is designated as the official site for dispensing Tamiflu antiviral drugs if authorised by the Health Protection Unit.
Key points:
The vast majority of sufferers will not be seriously ill.
Possible sufferers will have or have had a temperature of 38 degrees C and EITHER two or more of the following symptoms: cough, sore throat, runny nose, limb/joint pain, headache OR severe illness suggestive of infection
Possible sufferers aged 5-44 will be targeted for swabbing if presenting with suspicious symptoms even if no history of contact with known swine flu or travel in an affected area. ANY AGE will be tested if clinically indicated.
Direct telephone contact with NHS DIRECT or GP or National Swine Flu advice centres is best. A 'flu friend' can help if needed. The site of medical attention will the be arranged if needed
Clear details of symptoms will help. In the case of contact enquiries, the duration and proximity of the contact is essential to receive correct advice. If close contact occurs for more than one hour, then blood samples repeated after 14 days may be suggested.
Suspects will be tested with throat and nasal swabs and positive results followed up with blood tests
Keep contacts to an essential minimum if possible with confirmed sufferer till condition settled.
CATCH IT, BIN IT, KILL IT!
The routines could change depending on local number of cases. We all need to be very aware, and 'flu friend' networks should be set up especially for those living alone.
