CHARLES GRAHAM - Silent movie fans have last laugh

I TAKE plenty of stick for some of my fogeyish views.

And until recently one of the biggest laughs was raised by my championing of silent movies. It has grieved me no end that cinematic masterpieces from the first three decades of moving pictures have been sidelined because, we keep being told, technology has moved on. Some channels have even been loath to show anything in black and white for ages.

Then along comes The Artist - the first silent to be nominated for a Best Picture Oscar since 1927 - and suddenly technology isn’t everything after all.

I’ve not seen it yet but am already glad of its existence. It could open up a whole new (old) world of silver screen magic to the 21st century.
