COMMENT - Foul eyesore
THE site which greets visitors to the Kirkless Industrial Estate is nothing short of a disgrace.
Vast piles of rotting waste tower over the neighbourhood while fences risk collapse as the site bursts at the seams.
And as winter turns to spring in a few weeks’ time, neighbouring businesses will again have rats, foul smells and clouds of flies to contend with yet again, on top of the visual scars.
What has become known as McCann Mountain is a festering sore on the borough that should have been dealt with long ago.
Its owners, who have relaunched the operating firm several times with slight changes of names after court prosecutions, are nowhere to be seen and have ignored calls by the Environment Agency to tidy up.
Ironically, because they don’t have a permit – for which McCann’s was prosecuted more than once – that makes it harder to enforce clearance.
But there must be something that the authorities can do to make those responsible for this disgusting mess to dispose of it at last.

Monday, February 6, 2012 at 01:20 PMThe council has a bunch of Environmental officers, spend millions on a legal department and this is best they do ! Whilst a company may have ‘limited liability’ - directors lose this for misconduct or illegal operation and become personally liable. On liquidation, then there is also preferential creditors and if the government is one – well obviously has to pay for site remediation as part and parcel of new ownership of the land. ------ Further to this, as to No. 4 Shugger comments on actual article “Neighbours of this rotting eyesore demand action”, these are also health & safety and tax office issues etc (although guessing on the National Insurance matter, this may be just what he was told by the Jobcentre, as it’s one of the standard tactics they use to cheatdelay unemployment benefit based on other people’s experienced - if not, there is some serious failing concerning the tax office too - three years, they have breached not only monthly but yearly returns or false accounting etc !). -------------- As to £70k fine - IF it got paid - was it swallowed up by a big black hole ? or perhaps doubtful some even went to clean up the canal that was polluted as a result of this mess which must be still a potential risk ! What seems to be amiss - is the authorities lack of responsibility – handing out penalty notices and hope fines get paid ? Is that what people get paid six figure sums for, oh dear - what can they do if they don’t get paid !
