MUSIC SCENE: Wigan's very own supergroup

A newly formed Wigan supergroup will play their first ever gig tonight (Friday, June 19).

The Tenth are made up of present and former members of Gunpowder Plot, The Quantus Earthquake, Ideal Crash, Hector and The Filthy Souls.

They will be taking to the stage at The New Tavern, on Mesnes Street, for a gig that has been organised by Martland Mill Football Club.

The night will be a fund-raiser for the club, which needs cash to cover costs over the coming season.

The band's heavy rock sound also has plenty of punk rawness and speed, and some underlying subtle influences.

A list of their favourite ever acts includes Muse, Black Sabbath and The Mars Volta, as well as Tracy Chapman and Beth Orton.

Rob Fairhurst, the band's drummer, said: "It's great to be in a band with these guys.

"We've all been friends for years and writing a set has proved to be remarkably easy with the amount of musical experience and ability on display in this band.

"We've been feeling really good all week ahead of the gig.

"It will be a lot of fun."

Copies of the band's debut recording, which features seven tracks, will be available at tonight's gig.

Guitarist Baz Robinson added: "It has taken us three months to go from nothing to a set that we are confident enough to gig with and a recording that we are all happy with and proud of."

The Bear will also be performing tonight.

The band features ex-members of Hector and Ideal Crash.

Scumbag DJs will play sets in between performances.

Doors will open at 9pm and the first band will be on stage at approximately 10pm. Admission is 3.50.
