THE re-launch of a Wigan entertainment venue went with a bang - thanks to England’s favourite pub landlord.

New owners of the former Monaco Ballroom in Hindley booked top comedian Al Murray for its official launch after being refurbished and renamed The Rose Club.

The venue, which was formerly run by Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust, was sold off as part of budget cuts which have hit local authorities across the country.

And Rose Leisure bosses promised to do the local people proud and bring top acts to Wigan while boosting the local economy and morale.

The Al Murray show on Saturday evening was a sell-out - and bosses are promising more great names will be coming to the venue if local people continue to support it.

Brothers Kerry and Gary Tyrer of Rose Leisure, said: “Al Murray enjoyed the night as much, if not more than the audience.

“We want to say a big thank you from Rose Leisure to the people of Wigan for coming out in force and confirming what we already knew they are always up for a laugh.

“The night exceeded our expectations and gave us the reassurance that the people of Wigan will support our vision of providing a local venue that can attract top artists.”

Every ticket was sold for the gig and with a constant stream of customers at the bar, boss Gary found himself serving at one point.

Meanwhile the Pub Landord himself, took to his Twitter page to thank the Wigan audience ... even if he did use the venue’s former name.

He said: “Venue of legends, the Wigan Monaco Ballroom, home of Northern Soul, yes?”

Rose Leisure took ownership of the Monaco Ballroom, Ince Community Hall, Formby Hall and Lowton Civic Hall in June.

The company renamed three of the venues in a bid to give them a new lease of life.

Lowton Civic Hall is now The Rose Centre, Ince Town Hall is the The Rose Hall while Formby Hall kept the same name.

Upcoming events at the Rose Club include, Grand Professional Wrestling, The Lancashire Hotpots Christmas Show and the hugely popular, John Martin Sound.
