PUPILS shared their love of the written word with elderly residents in a care home as part of a themed storytelling week.

The 10 Year 7 pupils from Bedford High School read out stories residents at Bedford Nursing Home had written about their favourite books, before chatting to them about reading and literature.

The visit was part of the Big 12 events organised each year by BUPA, which is a programme of events for residential homes with a different theme each month.

The books ranged from Harry Potter and The Railway Children to stories about the Second World War.

Valerie Hilton, one of the home’s activity co-ordinators, said: “The residents love welcoming young people to the home, and the children seemed to enjoy their visit and interacted well with the residents.

“The pupils had a nice chat with the residents after they’d read out the stories and talked about how much they enjoyed reading. Some of them had read books the residents knew and liked, so they found lots to talk about.”
