Light for a Life, organised by Wigan and Leigh Hospice (WLH), allow hundreds of people to commemorate loved ones or mark important occasions in the run-up to the festive season.

The charity launched the appeal yesterday at its Hindley headquarters and dedications can be made now.

The appeal culminates in a moving switch-on ceremony at the hospice’s Kildare Street base in early December when a giant Christmas tree covered in thousands of lights, each one representing an individual dedication, is illuminated.

The event raises thousands of pounds for the hospice each year and 2017 is expected to be no different.

Christine Edwardson, WLH community fund-raiser, said: "Light for a Life is an opportunity for us to remember people we have lost but also to give thanks for those people we love and care about.

"It is open to anybody who wants to make a meaningful dedication to someone they love or have loved.

"Light for a Life is also a very important event for the hospice as the funds raised by dedications mean we can continue to support local people who have a life-limiting illness and those close to them."

Although many people use Light for a Life to remember former patients of the hospice and those who have died the event is very much a celebration of life as well.

Dedications can be made for occasions including new births, milestone birthdays and major wedding anniversaries.

Every name remembered in the appeal is entered into a book of dedication to be stored in the hospice.

This year’s switch-on ceremony at WLH is on Tuesday December 5 at 6.30pm and will include carols, hymns and readings.

Following the event, which always draws hundreds of Wiganers, dedications can continue to be made until the 12th night after Christmas.

Dedication forms can be obtained from the hospice’s network of charity shops across the borough, the reception at its Kildare Street headquarters and GPs surgeries.

Participants can also commemorate someone special online at www.wlh.org.uk

The book of dedication will be printed by next March and then go on permanent display alongside the ones from every year since A Light for a Life started in 1998.
