A MAN stole money from an elderly couple in Wigan.

At 2pm on Thursday, a man knocked on the door of the 78-year-old man and 75-year-old woman’s home on Chorley Road, Standish, claiming there had been an emergency down the road and they needed to let him in so he could turn off their stop cock and check their pipes.

They let him inside and told them to fill some pans with water in case their supply was off for some time.

A short time later, the man left.

Later that afternoon, the victims discovered their bedroom had been searched and cash had been taken.

The man is described as being white, 5ft 9in tall, in his mid 30s with dark slicked back hair. He was smartly dressed and wore a dark jacket and trousers. Anyone with information should phone police on 0161 856 7203 or the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
