Couple plump for proper Wigan wedding

HAVING a pie-themed wedding was the icing on the cake for Rachel and Michael Taylor.
The couple, from Higher Ince, showed their love of their home town by dedicating their big day to the top-tasting Wigan delicacy.
The main feature of their wedding feast was a large pie-shaped cake, dripping with ‘gravy’, and little cupcakes made to look like Wigan’s favourite delicacy, all handcrafted by Kev’s Cakes, in Pemberton.
Rachel, 25, said: “People loved the pie cakes. They were a bit surprised and because the cakes looked like pies, they were expecting it to taste like a pie when they bit into it, so it was a bit weird.
“This was something we wanted to do as we thought it was important to celebrate where we have grown up.”
And if pies weren’t enough to feed the hungry guests, the newlyweds treated them to a fish and chips supper, from their favourite chippy – Ince Plaice.
The fish and chips were wrapped in a newspaper personalised to capture the big day. Rachel, a sales rep for Optimum Sports clothing company, said: “We ordered about 36 portions of fish and chips, some sausages, and pudding and we had curry and pies on each table too.
“Everybody loves the chippy and it was wrapped in a spoof newspaper about us, which people could take home.”
The couple, who have been together 10 years, kept everything local to help make their big day one to remember.
They got married at Ince Parish Church and held the reception across the road at Ince Public Hall. The flowers and decorations were from Wigan’s indoor market and the evening food was supplied by Elaine’s Cakes and Buffets, in Whelley.
They will fly out to Slovenia later this week, where Rachel’s brother is getting married, to combine that wedding with their honeymoon.
The couple met through friends in 2000 and Rachel, formerly Ashurst, surprised Michael, 28, a warehouse deputy manager, with a proposal on their second anniversary.
She added: “We said if we were together for 10 years, we would get married and we thought it would be nice to do in on a big anniversary.”
