AN elderly man was saved from plummeting through the air and into motorway traffic by crash barriers.

The pensioner lost control of his silver Ford Focus as he drove along Crow Orchard Road, past the roundabout, and smashed into the bridge above the M6, northbound at Standish, at 4pm on Wednesday.

He escaped uninjured but was reported to be shocked.

Wigan fire crews attended as a precaution.

A spokesman for the fire service said: “Luckily he was prevented from dropping down onto the motorway by the crash barriers. He was scared as he didn’t know whether the barriers would hold, but it did.”
