A STOLEN van was abandoned after it crashed through the gates of Mesnes Park in Wigan town centre.

The Mercedes Sprinter van was reported to police by the park ranger after it was discovered on Sunday morning to have crashed through the gates on Park Road and into a flower bed.

Luckily because the incident happened early in the morning nobody was injured, although it is not known whether the driver sustained any injuries as they made off from the scene.

The crash is thought to have happened between 11pm on Saturday night and 5am on Sunday morning when it was discovered.

Police came out to the scene later that day and towed the van away. Investigations are on going.

A spokesman for Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust, which manages the park, said that there was little damage caused by the van other than tyre marks on the grass and a few uprooted plants.
