WIGAN’S night-time industry received a blow after a town centre bar owned by a financially-stricken chain was shut down.
The Chicago Rock bar, on King Street, was axed by Deloitte after its troubled owner, Atmosphere Bars and Clubs, slumped into administration.
Although the administrators were able to strike a deal to secure the future of around half the 24 premises owned by Atmosphere, Wigan’s Chicago Rock was not on the list and it closed its doors for good yesterday.
It is still unclear how many jobs have been lost at the night spot.
The closure was quickly reported on social media after passers-by spotted a truck being loaded with unsold stock outside the venue.
As the bar is located in one of Wigan’s busiest streets hopes were raised that buyers will be found to continue using the building as a bar.
There were previously 19 Chicago Rock bars around the country, and others in Warrington, Maidstone and Bristol are among the venues which have also been forced to close. Two bars were told they were shutting last week, with the remainder being axed yesterday.
Atmosphere was forced into administration earlier this year, citing cash flow problems. The company, which owns three Modello bars and two nightclubs in addition to the Chicago Rock chain of bars, employed around 75 full-time and 420 part-time staff.
