A DIGGER has been stolen from Robin Park sports centre... just yards from Wigan’s police station.
Workers have been on site at the complex for several weeks now as part of a £220,000 refurb of the tennis facilities.
A lot of the work being undertaken has seen refurbishment to the outdoor courts at the centre.
However, that was halted on Tuesday morning when workmen arrived on site and found they were one vehicle down.
A spokesman for Greater Manchester Police said: “We received a call at10.05am on Tuesday with reports of a stolen digger.
“It is believed to have bee taken between 4pm on Monday and 9.45am on Tuesday.
“Unfortunately no CCTV in the area caught any footage of the theft.”
The outdoor courts are situated to the rear of the sports centre, just opposite Wigan police station on Robin Park Road.
Due to the lack of CCTV evidence, it is unknown how the digger was taken from the site or whether the thieves left along Robin Park or Loire Drive.
Bosses at Robin Park hope that the incident won’t halt the process of the refurb with all work set to be completed in the new year.
The Lawn Tennis Association provided a huge funding boost to the tune of £150,000 while Wigan Council added £50,000 to the pot and Wigan Leisure Culture Trust funded £20,000.
It’s all part of Wigan Council’s Deal to invest in leisure facilities in the borough.
The four outdoor tennis courts at Robin Park will receive new surfaces, fencing, nets, posts, lighting and a new layout.
Inside, the courts will also have new surfaces, nets, posts and lighting with new curtains to the rear of the courts and dividing curtains to separate the three playing areas also included.
