WIGAN is set to benefit from the biggest jobs boost in the history of the borough, all thanks to Poundland.

A vast distribution centre for the national budget retailer will provide work no fewer than 800 people based at the South Lancs Industrial Estate.

This is fantastic news for Wigan borough and shows why we are a major player in the creation of a Northern Powerhouse

Council bosses have hailed the deal as highlighting Wigan “as a major player” and giving a significant uplift to the town’s economy.

The Poundland site will cover more than 30,000m sq on the former land of the fire-destroyed Georgia Pacific warehouse in Ashton, subject to planning approval.

Deputy leader Coun David Molyneux said: “Major investments in the borough are crucial to the local economy and will enable our local residents to access good quality jobs and new opportunities.

The new jobs will be a mix of full, part-time and apprenticeship roles, ranking it alongside Heinz and the council itself as one of the borough’s largest employers.
