A rubbish fire spiralled out of control, setting a transit van and trailer alight.

As think black smoke bellowed over Pennington Flash, a passerby alerted Atherton and Leigh fire services to a blaze at Sorrow Cow Farm, off Green Lane, Lowton, at 4pm on Saturday.

If you are going to burn rubbish, make sure it is away from anything else. Make sure you have enough water to extinguish it and never leave it unattended

Crews attended and discovered someone had left a pile of burning rubbish unattended and it had spread to a transit van, trailer and large goods vehicle, completely destroying them.

Firefighters used two hose reels, a portable pump and jet to extinguish the fire.

No-one was injured during the blaze.

Watch manager Dave Holden warned people about leaving burning rubbish unattended.
He said: “If you are going to burn rubbish, make sure it is away from anything else in case the fire spreads. Make sure you have enough water to extinguish it and never leave it unattended.

“The safest option is to recycle rubbish or ask the council to take it away.”
